“Good” Hair, “Good” Bodies
I was always told that I have “good hair”. I wasn’t comfortable with this because I knew that my hair wasn’t better than anyone’s. I spent a lot of time hating my own hair and wishing it was different, curlier, straighter, thicker, and so on. I’ve grown up since then and learned that we will always want what we don’t have and that we must change our perspectives.
I find all hair types to be so beautiful; there are so many unique things you can do with each of them. Hair is art! It bothers me for anyone to feel like (or be told) they can’t wear the hair they were BORN with the way it is naturally. Why would only certain people have been given “better” hair or any features for that matter? Who decides what type of hair and features are ‘better’? And why are they given such power to decide this? The truth is, this is a very deep issue for women of color that goes way back. I wish I could hug anyone who thinks their hair or body is not good enough. Beauty ideals are an illusion and made up. Although it’s hard, we can free ourselves from them and love the body we’ve been given. I love to see all hair and beauty types celebrated, especially the ones who’ve been told their look is not the ‘ideal beauty’. Let your hair be wild and free! That’s the best way for it to be!
